Kay Brothers is a heritage-rich, red‑focused McLaren Vale address where old vines, traditional winemaking and elevated vineyard views come together in one of the region’s most characterful cellar doors.
VARIETALS >
Kay Brothers is, at heart, a Shiraz house, with the variety accounting for the majority of production and underpinning the flagship Block 6 and Hillside bottlings. Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Mataro play important supporting roles in both varietal and blended reds, leaning into McLaren Vale’s reputation for full‑flavoured, structured wines. Recent vintages have broadened the white and lighter spectrum with Petit Blanc, Fiano and Grenache Rosé, offering a fresher counterpoint to the estate’s deeply fruited reds. Fortified styles, including tawny and muscat, reflect the winery’s long history and sit comfortably alongside the core dry range.
RANGE OF WINES >
At the very top of the tree sits Block 6 Shiraz, drawn from 1.5 hectares of vines planted in 1892 and consistently rated among Australia’s elite Shiraz, with the 2020 vintage named by Robb Report as one of the best Australian Shiraz to buy right now. Hillside Shiraz follows as a premium single‑site expression assembled from parcels across the Amery hillside, combining power, dark fruit depth and finely structured tannins.
Basket Pressed Shiraz is the estate’s signature traditional red, pressed in the original 1928 basket press and aged in a mix of small oak, delivering the plush, full‑bodied McLaren Vale style at a more accessible price and in meaningful volume. Alongside it, labels such as Griffon’s Key Grenache (a past “Best Wine of Show” on McLaren Vale’s wine circuit) and estate Cabernet expand the mid‑tier, often focusing on single‑vineyard fruit and classic regional characters.
Entry to the portfolio comes via lighter, drink‑now styles poured frequently at cellar door – think Petit Blanc, Fiano, Grenache Rosé and approachable red blends – plus a set of tawny and muscat fortifieds that showcase Kay Brothers’ historic strengths without the premium flagship price tags.
REGION >
McLaren Vale sits just south of Adelaide, framed by the Gulf St Vincent on one side and the Mount Lofty Ranges on the other, and Kay Brothers’ Amery vineyard is perched to take full advantage of the elevation and views back towards the hills. The site – planted originally in 1891 – is a patchwork of at least five soil types, from red loam over clay to sand, quartz and ironstone, contributing to the concentration and layered tannin profile for which the estate’s Shiraz is known. Proximity to the coast tempers summer heat with cooling sea breezes, helping maintain fruit freshness in what is otherwise one of Australia’s warm, reliably ripe red wine heartlands.
ACCOLADES >
Kay Brothers has held a long‑standing 5‑star rating in the Halliday Wine Companion, placing it among the “best of the best” Australian wineries. The estate’s Block 6 Shiraz is regularly singled out for high scores and cellaring potential, while recent vintages have drawn strong praise from international critics, including Wine Advocate and the Robb Report. Chief Winemaker Duncan Kennedy was crowned McLaren Vale Bushing King in 2017 for the 2016 Griffon’s Key Grenache, a trophy that underscored the strength of the winery’s Grenache program as well as its Shiraz.
EAT >
Kay Brothers does not operate a full restaurant on site, but the cellar door leans into a relaxed, grazing style built around wine. Guests can book tables on the deck, verandah or in the heritage cellar door to enjoy tasting flights, wines by the glass or bottle, and regional cheese platters designed to match the current releases. Regular one‑off events – from Valentine’s Day platters to Argentinian asado collaborations and art‑among‑the‑barrels evenings – add seasonal food interest without shifting the focus away from the wines themselves.
VISIT >
The cellar door is heritage‑listed and still houses original oak vats and open fermenters, giving tastings a tangible sense of continuity with the winery’s 19th‑century origins. Seated flights are the norm, with options that progress from lighter whites and rosé to the core Shiraz lineup, as well as dedicated fortified tastings for those who want to delve into tawny and muscat.
Views from the verandah and deck stretch over estate vines towards the Mount Lofty Ranges, making this a rewarding stop to linger over a glass rather than dash through a quick pour. Smaller groups (up to eight) are welcome to walk in, while larger parties are booked into hosted tastings that run for around an hour – a good amount of time to properly explore the range.
