It is a quiet street in the Shimogyo Ward of Kyoto where we found Wine Bar Fleur Parf, it is hidden at the end of a long passage (lit by lamps on the ground), past a beautiful courtyard garden to the bar at the back.
There you find a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of busy and touristy Kyoto. It is a place where there is a level of precision and perfection from the moment you arrive. The best seats have a view through the window to the garden which is lit up, but all of the seats are comfortable along the 6.5 meter wooden bar (the timber imported from South Africa).
The owner is a specialist, he stocks the wines of Burgundy, nothing less and nothing more. Both white and red (so Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) and there are about five bottles on tasting (under corovin) for when you arrive.
A knowledgeable sommelier will guide you in the flavour profile of the wines on offer to help find what you are going to like and our host was exceptional in his selection and presentation. With a delicate plate of cheese and dried fruit tastings to accompany the wines it was a perfect compliment.
The music is a low jazz that sits just loud enough to hear but not enough to annoy, the chairs are comfortable and the service excellent. If you are a Burgundy fan then this is a perfect venue for you, plan your trip to Kyoto and ensure than Fleur Parf is part of your itinerary, you won’t regret it.
