Thredbo Alpine Resort is located in the heart of the Kosciusko National Park its 493 kms from Sydney (5.5 hour drive) or 213km from Canberra (2.5 hours drive). Thredbo is very proud of wining Australia’s Best Ski Resort at the World Ski Awards for six years in a row! The resort does have a huge amount of terrain and variety which together with the village that is filled with classy accomodation and smart restaurants makes for a winning combination.
While many of the other Australian ski resorts boast of having longest runs of 2.5kms Thredbo has five runs that are longer, ‘The Cruiser’ to ‘High Noon’ runs 5kms from the top of Antons T-Bar to the bottom of the Gunbarrel Chair. But there is also the Supertrail (3.7km), Funnel Web (3.2km), World Cup Trail (3.5km) and The Village Trail (5km) a green run which meanders across the mountain from the top of Karels T-Bar (where you will find Australia’s highest lifted point and the Thredbo Community Bell) all the way across the mountain past the Eagles Nest, Black Sallees, Kareela and under the SnowGums Chair dropping you back to the village terminal so you can do it all over again!
Getting There
Thredbo Alpine Resort is located in the heart of the Kosciusko National Park its 493 kms from Sydney (5.5 hour drive) or 213km from Canberra (2.5 hours drive). From Sydney the expressway will take you via the M31 to Canberra, then on to Cooma and Jindabyne.
There are buses that go from Sydney, Canberra and Jindabyne up to Thredbo. Jindabyne is approximately 30 minutes by car up the Alpine Way, like all Alpine Resorts in Australia snow chains for your car tyres must be carried and fitted if so directed.
What is it like to ski?
For beginners the Friday Flat area has been specifically designed to help you get your snow legs, its a gentle slope with easy to use lifts a place to get you going straight away.
For Intermediate skiers there is a lot of terrain to explore with a series of ridges, spines and gullies that will get your heart racing and powder bowls like ‘The Basin’ that will make you soar (if the snow is dumping!).
For those looking to push it to the limits there are some challenging steep runs that fall away from the Eagles Nest Chair including ‘Funnel Web’, ‘Cannonball’ and over into the ‘Golf Course Bowl’.
For those skiers who only want it steep and challenging they probably wont find as much advanced terrain as Mt Hotham or even Mt Buller.
The village sits at 1360 elevation which means you start the day on a lift going up and the return to the bottom is often very thin due to marginal cover – in previous years they have needed to lift down as well with all the runs at the top, however smart snow making in recent years has largely stopped this being a problem.
Village Facilities
With a wealth of choice for restaurants, cafe’s and bars, Thredbo has most choices covered. From smart à la carte, to casual bistros, tapas and even American BBQ. Many of the hotels and lodges have bars for an apres drink but the Thredbo Alpine Hotel is a destination for many and way back in our youth we might have ended up on the dance floor at the Keller Bar, still stomping in our ski boots at 3am (just saying…).
Where to Stay
The Thredbo Alpine Hotel (Rydges) has been the centre of everything in the village for decades in the surrounding area The Thredbo Alpine Apartments are very smart and very close to the Kosciuszko Chairlift. There are lots of apartments to suit all tastes and budgets as well as ski clubs and lodges even some backpacker accomodation for those on a tight budget.
Over the last 10 years much of the development in Thredbo has been in the Friday Flat area which provides easy access to the Gunbarrel Express Chair. For those who don’t mind a short drive there is also a range of accomodation at Crakenback, it’s 22 kilometres up the road and takes about 18 minutes to get there and back. The Novotel Lake Crakenback Resort has the additional benefit of being very close to the Blue Cow Skitube (2km or 4 mins).
The skitube a Swiss designed rack and rail train that will take you from Bullocks Flat / Crackenback in to Perisher / Blue Cow (the trains go approximately ever 30 mins). The Skitube passes are $87 return so its best to plan ahead and pick a few days you intent to ski or ride in Perisher to take advantage of discounts.
