Where to stay in London is often the eternal question. For this visit, we were arriving via Eurostar and departing via Heathrow five days later. I landed on staying near St Pancras for ease of movements, helped by having The Standard on the door step. .
AMBIENCE >
The design of the hotel is one of its features. Formerly the Camden Town Hall Annex and built in the brutalist style, the hotel leans into this history, with an inhouse library (categories include sociology, gardening, hobbies and adult relationships) and a bold design informed by the outer curve of the building. The external red bullet lift is exclusively for Decimo, the 10th floor restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias.
The hotel was busy with guests and visitors, but the staff were warm and welcoming. It’s achingly cool, but friendly and fun.
EAT AND DRINK >
When we arrived, our first stop was the rooftop bar. It was cool-ish, but we were dressed for the warmer climate of France. There are a number of food and drink options, and dinner at Isla on our final evening was great. Taramasalata to start with, followed by roast chicken, washed down with red wine.
SLEEP >
My husband and I tend to overpack – I like having options, plus our activities often require appropriate gear – so I’d booked a decent sized room. It was colourful, comfortable and the right size for us. Wardrobes, a window bench seat with table, desk and television still left room for luggage and movement. The bench seat, nestled into the curve of the building, had views to St Pancras Station.
The open bathroom had a bath and a shower, with the toilet behind its own door. The Davines amenities were excellent.
The mini bar was very well stocked.
