When you tell people you are going to ski in Alleghe, the likely first comments are “where?” And the next comment if they do recognise the name is oh, yes AL – LEG – HEY. It seems a place where pronunciation of the name is a little complex, it is a small town about 30 kilometres from Cortina, it sits at 1000m and is on a lake with a gondola that takes you right up into the Monte Coldai (2480m) with its beautiful Dolomites right behind you.

Snow Lake Apartments sit fairly high up which provides good views of the town, lake and snow covered mountains but it is not a quick walk to the ski lift or to town. When it came to skiing it was much easier to jump in the car and drive the two minutes down and park right next to the lifts. Walking was perfect to unwind prior to dinner and to walk off the meal and drinks on the way home (its a little steep!).

There is parking across the road from the property and there is a drying room for skis and boots.

The apartment itself is two bedrooms and very comfortable with a modest kitchen, small couch and a good bathroom. The furniture is Ikea and all slightly the wrong shape for the spaces but it is functional and offers an excellent base to enjoy the region. Our apartment had a lovely balcony that was accessible from both bedrooms.

The ski resort above Alleghe is Civetta which has 73km of slopes and 23 lifts and good range of terrain to explore and small towns to ski across and visit.

VERDICT  >

Skiing is Civetta is at the opposite end of the scale when compared to the smarter towns and all the facilities of Ortisei, Cortina and Selva but this town is beautiful and it has something special.

If you choose to visit you will have to go to the Enotecca which is definitely the best restaurant and wine bar in town and worthy of many repeat visits (we did).

Snowlake Apartments provide a comfortable place to stay at a very reasonable price and they are convenient both for the skiing at Civetta and also to explore the surrounding area.
