Robert Groffier Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2020 is a delightful entry-level Burgundy that showcases the expertise of this renowned Chambolle-Musigny producer. This wine offers an excellent introduction to the Groffier style and the characteristics of Burgundian Pinot Noir. While this is an entry level wine (~$100 – $150 per bottle) the Grand Cru from this domain retail for well over $1700 per bottle.
Despite owning plots in prime Grand Cru vineyards such as Bonnes-Mares and Chambertin Clos-des-Bèze, Domaine Robert Groffier are still relatively unknown compared to the famous wine houses of Burgundy. The wine is made now by Robert’s son Serge and his grandson Nicolas. The estate has almost 8 ha of fine vineyards, including 1 ha of Bonnes Mares, almost 0.5 ha of Chambertin Clos-des-Bèze and a full 1 ha of Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses.
Winemaking is flexible dependant on the season, however new oak use is minimal, and the wines are only racked once at the end of the élevage.
The Tasting >
In the glass, this Bourgogne Pinot Noir displays a bright, translucent ruby color with subtle garnet hues at the rim, typical of young Pinot Noir from the region. The aromatic profile is enticing and complex: Underlying earthy tones of forest floor and mushroom provide depth, red fruits dominate, with notes of ripe cherries and strawberries, subtle hints of violets and rose petals add floral complexity.
Palate >
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a silky texture characteristic of well-made Burgundy:
- Flavors mirror the nose, with red fruit taking center stage
- Balanced acidity provides freshness and structure
- Fine-grained tannins offer a gentle grip
- A subtle minerality adds complexity to the finish
Finish >
The finish is medium in length, with lingering notes of red berries and a touch of spice, inviting another sip.
Powerful mid purple, plenty of fruit on the nose, but a little more backward than the Passetoutgrains. Sweetly ripe and with a beautiful raspberry/strawberry mix. This really has the depth, impressive at this level, a Bourgogne which will keep, for sure. Lovely crunchy finish. Surprisingly long.”
