There is a fairly good chance you have never heard of Aigua Blava, that is because it is a secret. You are not supposed to tell anyone about the remarkable coastline, hidden away, a little over an hour from Barcelona and about the same from the French Border.
Perched above a scalloped bay on the wild Costa Brava, Hotel Aigua Blava is the kind of place that feels plucked from a postcard: whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles, and pine trees framing a sweep of turquoise water. Family-run since the 1930s, this four-star hotel is a classic Mediterranean retreat-equal parts old-world charm and relaxed seaside living.
Arriving in the carpark, we dragged our suitcases across the gravel carpark towards the entry to be met by a staff member. “Hello and welcome, please let me take your suitcases cases, my name is Charlie but you can call me Bell Boy”.
At that moment we realised we had entered a hotel akin to a Wes Anderson film.

AMBIENCE >
You do not come to Aigua Blava for luxury, even for fine dining. Rather you come here to soak up the beauty of the surroundings. No doubt that Aigua Blava’s greatest asset is its setting. The hotel sprawls across manicured gardens and sun-kissed terraces, with almost every angle offering a cinematic view of the craggy coastline and the impossibly blue sea below. Interiors lean traditional-think sturdy wooden furniture, tiled floors, and a palette of soft creams and blues. There’s a gentle hum of nostalgia here, but the vibe is never stuffy. Instead, expect a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, with staff who are genuinely warm and attentive.
ROOMS >
The 85 rooms and suites are a mixed bag: most are spacious and spotless, with balconies or terraces that make the most of those knockout views. Décor is classic Mediterranean-ceramic tiles, simple wooden furnishings, and the occasional splash of floral print. Some rooms feel a little dated, particularly in the older wings, but you’ll find all the essentials: flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and L’Occitane toiletries. Families can opt for apartments with kitchens and living areas, while couples should spring for a sea-facing balcony.
EAT & DRINK >
Dining at Aigua Blava is all about the view. The main restaurant sits on a terrace overlooking the bay-a spectacular spot for a long, lazy breakfast or sunset dinner. The menu leans Catalan, with plenty of seafood and local produce, it is not fancy fine dining but that is not why you came here. Breakfast, however, is a highlight-plentiful and varied, best enjoyed with the morning sun glinting off the water.

WORKOUT >
There’s plenty to keep you busy between siestas: a large saltwater pool with ocean views, tennis and volleyball courts, a small gym. You can walk down to the ocean coves and swim or take a walk along a path (the Cami de Ronda) that seems to wander in and out of peoples gardens before arriving at the Platja d’Aiguablava which is a lovely spot for a swim and lunch at the Toc al Mar. You can also rent a kayak next door.
The hotel’s gardens and terraces are perfect for an afternoon with a book or a glass of cava. Parking, Wi-Fi, and cots are all included, and the staff can arrange everything from massages to bike rentals and local excursions.
LOCATION >
Aigua Blava is tucked into a quiet cove near Begur, surrounded by pine forests and rocky beaches. The hotel offers direct access to two sandy coves and is within walking distance of several excellent seafood restaurants and the famed Platja Cala Aigua Blava. A car is recommended if you want to explore the medieval villages and hidden calas of the Costa Brava.
CONCLUSION >
Hotel Aigua Blava is a classic Costa Brava hideaway-unbeatable for its views, gardens, and easygoing Mediterranean charm. The staff are a genuine highlight, and the setting is hard to top.
