STAY > Circa 1936, Corowa

There is every chance you have never heard of Corowa, a sleepy town on the Murray River that also marks as the border between Victoria and New South Wales. The town was established in the 1850’s as a river port and it prospered with hotels, banks and a courthouse. That heritage has made the town a lovely place to visit and very convenient place to stay when travelling around the Rutherglen wine region.

Circa 1936 feels out of place, as you step into this smart boutique hotel with it’s beautiful artworks and design classic furniture all set in the original architecture of a deco period former bank building, you are going to start thinking ‘what is this place’.

Hosts Jen and John go out of their way to make sure that every moment spent at Circa 1936 is special from a welcome drink at the cocktail bar through to helping find the best place for dinner in Corowa or Rutherglen, even visiting the surrounding vineyards.

SLEEP >

There are only four suites (North, South, West and Loveridge) each has something special and all of them are very generous in proportion (~50-54 sqm). Each room has what you would expect in a fine boutique hotel, Smart TV, quality toiletries and amenities, a lovely walk in shower and a bath. In the case of the Loveridge suite it is a huge copper bath, you have to watch the video below to get a sense of it.

EAT >

Circa 1936 does do breakfast but not dinner, but there are plenty of excellent choice in the area and hosts Jen and John will help you with finding an appropriate place. On our stay the venue we had booked had for some reason closed without notice, and they were able to help us find some excellent take away and set up a dining table for us, complete with some lovely wine.

WORK OUT >

Nope, not here. Go for a run along the Murray River or take the golf clubs and visit one of the nearby golf courses. Isn’t visiting a winery a work out?

CONCLUSION >

Circa 1936 is a beautiful spot for a weekend away, combine it with a couple of wineries and visit to one of the smart regional restaurants and its a short break you will remember for years.
