STAY > Adelphi Hotel, Melbourne

The Adelphi was the first boutique designer hotel in Melbourne build into a narrow warehouse that dated back to 1938 by renowned Melbourne architects Denton Corker Marshall for a couple of decades it held that top spot for those looking for style and individuality for a hotel in the centre of the city.

In 2013 the hotel was given a revamp by Hachem who freshened the property up and gave it a new quirky style. Many of the original elements that stood out remain but it is a lot busier than previous iteration and given that renovation is now more than ten years ago it is possibly approaching time for another freshen up.

That said it remains a design icon, in a perfect location and it has the best (small) swimming pool in the city.

SLEEP >

While there are only thirty four rooms in the hotel, there are five classes of room from the Premier King at 35m2, Superior King 40m2, Deluxe King 45m2 and the appropriately named Palatial Suite with 100 square meters of space.

Every room (other than the premier twin) features a king bed, 42 inch high definition flatscreen tv and plenty of charging stations for your phone and electronics. Bathroom amenities come from Australian skin care brand Hunter Lab.

EAT >

Given you are on Flinders Lane you are right in the very centre of Melbourne’s fine dining district with way too many options to cover here. Chin Chin, Super Normal, Kisume, Coda, Lucy Liu, Movida, Tonka, Lee Ho Fook, Patstuso, Grill Americano, The 100, Hazel, Gimlet and many, many more are right on your doorstep.

But don’t forget to book, Melbourne restaurants are often booked out a fortnight in advance and super popular venues book more than a month out.

Lune Croissanterie has an outlet on Russell Street only a few steps away for those looking for a coffee and pastry fix but don’t be surprised to find very long queues if you arrive peak morning as this place has a huge reputation.

Brunetti Oro is a smart place for coffee a little further down on Flinders Lane and of course you have to wander down to Degraves Street which is full of venues always changing but every popular.

WORK OUT >

The Adelphi has a glass pool that cantilevers out over Flinders Lane so if swimming is your thing this is a great experience. Alternatively for walking or running the Melbourne Botanical Gardens known as “the Tan” is a great place to walk or run the 3.8 kilometre loop.

DRINK >

Arriving at Adelphi there are welcome drinks and if the weather works the pool deck is gong to be the perfect place. But after that you have lots of amazing choices right around the corner. Apollo Inn is just up the street for outstanding cocktails. Or pop into the big sister venue Gimlet and get a martini at the bar. Around the corner and down Malthouse Lane you will find Eau De Vie a smart bar with little signage hidden away. The Whiskey Den next door to Gimlet on Russell Street has a great range of offerings.
