Set on the tranquil banks of the Noosa River, (a short and easy 15 minute walk from Hastings Street) Rickys River Bar & Restaurant is a long-standing pillar of Noosa’s dining scene — it’s a place where Noosa’s Sunshine Coast natural beauty meets polished hospitality and refined, produce-driven cooking. Rickys has doubled its riverfront footprint in recent years (taking over the former Japanese restaurant ‘Wasabi’ next door which closed during the COVID Pandemic), making the most of its location.
AMBIENCE >
Rickys is all about understated coastal elegance. The open, light-filled dining room flows seamlessly onto the riverfront terrace, offering uninterrupted water views from nearly every seat. The atmosphere is relaxed yet sophisticated, with crisp white table settings, soft lighting at dusk, and a gentle hum of contented diners.
Whether you arrive by road, water taxi, or the Noosa Ferry (the restaurant boasts its own private jetty), there’s a sense of arrival and occasion here. Service is familiar, attentive and professional, striking a balance between warmth and efficiency—regulars are recognised, but newcomers are welcomed with equal grace.
We returned after a gap of six years and yet there was an immediate familiarity with the venue, the staff and the food. It was nice.
FOOD >
Signature dishes like the Noosa spanner crab spaghettini with chilli, garlic, parsley, shallots, and lemon have become local legends, and of course the passionfruit soufflé with crème fraiche and white chocolate is a must for dessert lovers.
The recent visit reveals a kitchen in fine form: Olives stuffed with three cheeses and perfectly fried, Morton Bay Bug served in a brioche bun with salmon roe (another classic and yummy), Marinated Spanish Mackerel with horseradish, fried capers and parsley, perfectly tender fried calamari, an eye fillet cooked to textbook precision. Each dish was perfectly executed and full of flavour.
DRINK >
Rickys’ wine list is extensive and thoughtfully curated, with a strong showing of Australian and international producers. There are some excellent Australian choices as well and a number of great old wines from Italy and France.
The cocktail program is equally polished, making the River Bar a destination in its own right for a pre-dinner drink or a leisurely afternoon by the water.
SERVICE>
Service at Rickys is a highlight—professional, knowledgeable, and unobtrusive. Staff are quick to offer recommendations, happy to accommodate special requests, and adept at reading the mood of the room. It was noticeable how professional and smooth the team were from the moment we arrived.
CONCLUSION >
Rickys is a Noosa classic for a reason. With its riverside setting, accomplished kitchen, and polished service, it delivers a dining experience that feels both celebratory and quintessentially local. Book ahead, request a window table, and arrive by water if you can—the memory will linger long after the last spoonful of soufflé.
