EAT > Frank, Hobart (14/20)

Frank is a smart restaurant with robust South American cuisine that is right on Franklin Pier looking out towards Sullivan’s Cove. It was described by a friend as, “you can’t miss it, its right underneath the Commonwealth Bank”.

Arriving at the front door the restaurant is disected into two zones on the left the dining area that sits close to the bar and to the right the zone around the kitchen. Each area is fairly dark with smart lighting, the accoutics are quite harsh and when a large group of ladies came into our area it was hard to hear each other with all the noise bouncing around the room

FOOD >

If you have ever eaten at San Telmo, Asado or Palermo in Melbourne or Portẽno in Sydney, you already know the menu. And like all of the above restaurants, if you are in the mood for big chunks of perfectly cooked meat, together with some good spicy sauces, then this is definitely going to be the place for you.

Our meal consisted of a starter of whipped cod roe on a home baked sour dough crumpet (delicious) the chewy crumpet was in perfect harmony with the whipped cod roe ($9.50 each). Next a three cheese Empanada was tasty and cheesy ($6.50). Our final entree was a beef carpaccio served with parmesan and pepperberry ($24)

Our mains were a beetroot salad with a 300 gram hanger steak cooked medium rare and served with chimi churri and a spicy hot sauce ($47).

All up the food was spot on, it was delicious and very filling shared between two. The service felt a little pressured, the food all came out at once and it was much more like pub or bistro atmosphere and service rather than fine dining.

WINE >

The wine list was not extensive and the mark up quite high, we ended up drinking a bottle of Sailor meets Horse (2022) a wine that retails for $65 was marked up to $150 in the restaurant.

CONCLUSION >

Ultimately a little disappointed. The food was great, but it may have been the large groups, the slightly haphazard service. The lack of decent glassware to serve the wine, and definitely no sign of a decanter to aerate the wine should it have been required. When you are paying that much you just expect a bit more. Thus the score. Food 4.5/5, Service 3.5/5, Wine 3/5, Room 3/5 = 14/20.
