WINE > Yeringberg – Pinot Noir 2019 (93/100 points)

THE WINERY

Yeringberg and the de Pury family are original pioneers of wine making in the Yarra Valley of Victoria. The original vineyard was established in 1863, though many of the grapes were pulled out with vines replanted in the 1970s. In 1969 Guill and Katherine de Pury (already the 3rd generation wine makers) commenced replanting vines, which have been producing beautiful fruit bottled into wine since 1974. Sandra de Pury has been the wine maker since 2008 and her brother David de Pury manages the vineyards.

WINE MAKING

“The 2019 Pinot Noir combines the kind of ripeness and generosity, delicacy and finesse that characterise great Pinot Noir. Initially reserved, the nose offers notes of sun-kissed strawberry, blood plum and rose petal, together with exotic hints of musk and nutmeg. The palate has a supple richness, with a depth of flavour built on both the character of the vintage and the age of the vines. Juicy strawberry fruit, plum and rhubarb flavours are underpinned by an almost luxuriant structure that’s defined by savoury mushroom and spicy oak notes, all of which come together beautifully on the deeply perfumed finish. This is a wine to enjoy now and will build complexity with 8-10 years in the bottle.” Sandra de Pury

This wine comes from vines planted 1969-1974, grapes are fully de-stemmed and hand plunged then the wine matured for about 18 months in 35% new oak, bottling occurred with no fining or filtration.

THE TASTING

Drinking the Yeringberg 2019 Pinot Noir, the day after a Domain Tollot-Beaut Chorey-Les-Beaune Protégée 2018 and I was struck by the similarities in style. (Both are beautiful wines) the Yeringberg starts with a musky nose, not particularly perfumed but enticing, then its juicy on the palate with a pretty poached rhubarb and strawberry first on the front palate and then a lingering spice laden finish on the back.

The tannins are firm but not overly so, delivering a gentle whoosh that makes you think, mmm that is good, really very good!

SIGHT

Clean bright and pale in the glass.

25/25

NOSE

Musky and rich scents no pungency and not particularly strong.

22/25

PALATE

Pretty and gentle as you approach it, flavours of poached rhubarb and strawberries with cinnamon and nutmeg. Elegant on the palate, the finish also brings out the mushroom and tobacco characteristics.

23/25

FINISH

This wine has an gentle and delicious finish, it is not over ripe but gentle structure stays with you, lingering long after the last drop is swallowed.
