DRINK > Bread & Butter Chardonnay 2021

Our last evening staying at the incredible ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort we were offered drinks at the generous ‘aperitivo hour’ a time for snacks and drinks while enjoying the music from resident piano man ‘Salvatore’ (who comes from Calabria). Feeling like we had already consumed a little too much of the house Champagne (Ayala) we asked if they had a Chardonnay. The waiter returned with the ‘Bread & Butter’ Chardonnay from Nappa Valley California 2021. I was cautious.

The colour in the glass is quite a dark gold which immediately surprised me. On the nose there was honey and classic ripe peach and some spice but there was something else lingering that was hard to pick until I tasted it.

On the palate there is a very rich candied creme brulee characteristic which was delicious though unexpected. The peach and spice were still there as well as vanilla and oak. The finish was quite long and lingering.

This wine stood out because it didn’t have classic chardonnay characteristics but yet it was delicious. I have read reviews by others who talk about tasting bacon fat (odd), some talk of the creamy nature and others mention almond nuttiness.

What I will say is this wine which is probably available in supermarkets in the US at $13.75 USD was actually delicious, so there you go – surprised! Unlikely to have ever chosen it but would happily drink again if on offer.
