CAFE > Bread, Espresso &, Shibuya

If you arrive in Tokyo early in the morning and go looking for coffee you are going to be a little surprised. This is a city where retail opens at 11am and many of the food and drink venues similarly don’t open. Sure you can find a Starbucks, Gloria Jean or similar chain store but they are all fairly ghastly. Even Dean & Deluca really isn’t great. So making a plan where you find your morning caffeine hit is going to be important. We have already suggested a few good choices, American chain Blue Bottle have smart stylish venues and make good coffee (not much in the food department), Australian restaurant chain Bills is consistent, coffee is fine and food is quite good (there are a few Bills restaurants in Tokyo), and we previously reviewed Parklet which is great.

If you find yourself over in Shibuya and are looking for an early open breakfast cafe then you might be very happy to find Bread & Espresso. Firstly the coffee is excellent from the various espresso offerings through to the Americano. But unlike Blue Bottle there was not a batch brew or pour over option.

There is an excellent range of bakery options in the window (they will happily warm something up for you) and there are some cooked items, they even licensed if you need a tipple later in the day.

If you choose to sit outside which is lovely on a warm afternoon, they do have outside heaters and blankets for the cooler months.

Yes it is part of a chain but the coffee is good, the pastries are delicious and it is open from 8am in Shibuya so it is a great choice & you are welcome.
