Battle of Bosworth is one of McLaren Vale’s most characterful cellar doors: organically farmed, family-run, and set in a restored 1850s chaff shed and stables with sweeping vineyard views to Gulf St Vincent, it combines serious wine credentials with a relaxed, regionally grounded setting.
VARIETALS >
Battle of Bosworth is best known for Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Chardonnay also forming a major part of the estate’s plantings. The also have a broader range also including Touriga Nacional, Graciano, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Mourvèdre, giving the cellar door enough breadth to appeal beyond the usual McLaren Vale staples. The winery also produces Spring Seed wines from the same organically grown vineyards, which adds a second, more approachable layer to the portfolio.
REGION >
McLaren Vale remains one of Australia’s most compelling wine regions because it can deliver generosity without losing freshness, and Bosworth’s vineyard holdings lean into that balance. The cellar door at 92 Gaffney Road, Willunga, sits in a heritage building that looks out over the vines and toward the sea, which gives the tasting room an easy sense of place. That setting matters here because the wines are clearly made to express the district rather than chase novelty for its own sake.
ACCOLADES >
Battle of Bosworth has built its reputation on organic viticulture and consistent regional recognition, with the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon taking the Trophy for Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine at the 2024 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards.
The winery’s 2024 Heretic blend also picked up a Top Gold at the 2025 McLaren Vale Wine Show, underlining that the more adventurous side of the portfolio is not just experimental but genuinely serious. Its organic conversion began in 1995, which makes Bosworth one of the pioneering names in the region’s organic movement.
RANGE OF WINES >
At the top end, Battle of Bosworth’s premium wines are the most polished expression of the estate’s organically grown fruit, with bottles such as its Cabernet Sauvignon and Heretic blend showing the depth that has earned awards and trophies. The core Battle of Bosworth range is positioned as the winery’s flagship line, traditionally vinified and built to show McLaren Vale terroir with more structure and complexity.
Below that sits the Spring Seed range, which uses the same vineyard resources but is framed as a more relaxed, approachable label, while the Outlier Range pushes into more innovative, Mediterranean-leaning territory. In short, the range runs from trophy-level, cellar-worthy wines through to easier-drinking bottles that are designed for everyday enjoyment rather than special occasions.
