There are wines that whisper history, and then there are bottles that speak in confident, measured tones—Domaine de Bellene’s Nuits Saint Georges Vieilles Vignes 2022 is unmistakably the latter. From the first pour, its deep ruby hue glimmers with an old-vine intensity, setting the stage for a wine that embodies the soulful side of Burgundy.
APPEARANCE & AROMA >
The glass reveals a vivid, luminous ruby—clear and alluring, with legs that move slowly, promising weight without heaviness.
On the nose, wild black cherry and ripe red currant mingle with whispers of violets and forest undergrowth. There’s a gentle signature of smoky spice—think clove, cracked pepper, and subtle hints of fine oak—woven into every swirl. It’s a bouquet that commands a pause, inviting the taster deeper with each breath.
PALATE >
First impressions across the palate are concentrated yet elegant. Fine, chalky tannins give the wine a structural pulse, while flavours of crushed blackberry, dark plum, and a touch of earthy truffle unfurl toward the mid-palate. There’s a deft interplay between lacy acidity and savour — all lifted by a mineral backbone that keeps things vividly fresh. Texture is velvety, but the finish stretches, echoing with persistent spice and stony grace.
VERDICT >
This 2022 vintage is a lovely wine, a compelling study in balance — there is richness, energy, and the quiet gravitas that only old vines can summon. I really like Nuits Saint Georges, there are very few bad wines made but the Domaine de Bellene brings restraint and unmistakable terroir to every glass, making this a Nuits Saint Georges that lingers on the palate with quiet composure long after the last sip.
Best enjoyed with rare lamb, roast pigeon, or alone with a fine gorgonzola as a contemplative evening unfolds.
