Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea and out to the Isola Bella (which is immediately familar to anyone who watched White Lotus) The UNA Hotel Capotaormina offers the perfect beach alternative to being up high in the pretty village of Taormina (204 metres above).
The UNA is a funny hotel its all 1960’s Italian styling (actually I just think they haven’t renovated since the 60s). The rooms are really generous though, many with large balconies that sit out over the sea.
The views are spectacular. The hotel hangs off the edge of cliff, suspended between sky and sea, providing panoramic views that encompass Mount Etna, Isola Bella, and the Bay of Naxos—a trifecta of visual splendor that few properties in the Mediterranean can match.
LOCATION >
What immediately captivates visitors is the hotel’s extraordinary setting. The property stretches along the tip of a promontory south of Taormina, offering 360-degree sea views that are simply mesmerizing.
Perhaps the most remarkable feature is the 200-meter tunnel carved through the rock, connecting the main building to one of the restaurants, the private beach and the swimming pool areas.
FACILITIES >
The saltwater swimming pool is very popular, nestled on top of a cliff where the blue waters seem to merge with the Sicilian sea beyond. There are numerous deck chairs and umbrellas to soak up the rays (or catch a little shade between dips). From the pool you can walk to a spot where you can dive off the rocks and swim directly out front, there are stairs to return to the pool area.
The private beach area features cleverly arranged deckchairs on the rocks, allowing guests to soak up the Mediterranean sun in comfort while enjoying the spectacular coastal scenery. Though this area does tend to loose the sun mid afternoon so people move from the beach to the pool.
The property also offers a beauty center offering massages and anti-stress treatments, and a fitness center with personal trainers.
ROOMS >
The hotel houses 190 rooms, many featuring private balconies, minibars, LCD televisions, and complimentary WiFi. While the interior decoration may feel dated in certain rooms, the comfortable beds and stunning views more than compensate for any aesthetic shortcomings. The real luxury here is waking up to the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs and drawing back your curtains to reveal that impossibly blue Ionian Sea.
DINING >
The hotel features three restaurants, including the smart Le Grand Bleu which is through the tunnel and down on the water and the more casual Naxos restaurant, where guests can savour authentic regional flavours. The breakfast buffet receives particular praise, offering a diverse selection of quality products, both savory and sweet, served against the backdrop of the sea and Mount Etna. The Svevo bar with its live music creates a magical evening atmosphere that perfectly complements the natural beauty surrounding the property.
SERVICE >
The staff at UNA HOTELS Capotaormina contributes significantly to the overall experience. From the reception team to the housekeeping staff, service is generally friendly and attentive. The team at the beach restaurant accommodates guests even before opening hours, and the bar staff creates a welcoming environment for evening relaxation. A complimentary shuttle service to Taormina’s center adds convenience for guests wanting to explore the historic town.
CONCLUSION >
UNA HOTELS Capotaormina offers a different place to stay in Taormina where you can enjoy the beach by day and then visit the town in the evening.
While some aspects of the interior design are dated, everything is fresh and comfortable. The breathtaking views, excellent dining options, and unique features like the rock tunnel and cliff-side pool do create an unforgettable stay.
