When you mention a weekend on the peninsula you get questions about where you are staying, what you are eating and the wineries and beaches you might visit. Mention Jackalope and you get ohh yes that place is fantastic and there is a good reason for that, they try very hard to make something a little magical.
The name Jackalope comes from the mythical american rabbit with antelope (originally created in Wyoming in the 1930’s) the mystique of the Jackalope is that it is a creature of humour and folklore, whimsical, creative and fun.


Tucked away on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula, the Jackalope Hotel is a boutique retreat that masterfully blends luxury with an avant-garde aesthetic. This stylish haven, nestled amidst the rolling vineyards of Willow Creek Vineyard, offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking a sophisticated getaway from Melbourne.
It is the kind of hotel experience that tries to solve everything for you from the free mini bar (replenished daily) to the constant and free flowing supply of icecream and popcorn. They have movies that they show nightly over the pool and organised tours of the vegetable garden and winery. They even have a fleet of smart Lexus SUVs to take you where ever you need to go on the peninsula!

As you step into Jackalope, you are enveloped by a strikingly modern yet elegantly refined atmosphere. The hotel’s design is a thoughtful fusion of contemporary chic and natural elements, reflecting the beauty of its surroundings. The interior spaces are adorned with sleek furnishings and artistic installations, creating a unique and captivating ambiance that sets the tone for a memorable stay.
Jackalope Hotel is a masterpiece of bold and modern architecture, crafted by the Australian architecture firm Carr. The hotel features a striking black metal-clad form with charred timber detailing and a dramatic saw-cut roof, paying homage to the historical agricultural barns in the area while offering a contemporary twist. The design is inspired by the concept of an alchemist’s workshop, incorporating elements of gold, silver, copper, and bronze to evoke a sense of mystery and transformation.
Louis Li, the visionary behind Jackalope, aimed to create a hotel that challenges the traditional luxury landscape by integrating art, design, food, and storytelling into a unique guest experience. Li, inspired by his background in filmmaking and hotel development, sought to craft a surreal and immersive environment that stands out as a hospitality landmark. His vision is to make Jackalope a destination that not only offers luxury but also inspires and transforms its guests.

SLEEP >
Each room at Jackalope is meticulously crafted to provide comfort and luxury. The spacious suites are equipped with plush beds, lavish amenities, and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to pour in, offering breathtaking views of the vineyard. The attention to detail in every aspect of the accommodations ensures a restful and rejuvenating stay.
EAT >
There are two options to eat when you stay at Jackalope and that is before you take in the opportunities of all the excellent restaurants (many in wineries) on the Mornington Peninsula.
The posh place to eat for guests is at the hotel’s renowned restaurant, Doot Doot Doot. They offer a fine dining experience with a menu that celebrates local produce and innovative techniques, paired with an exceptional selection of wines from the surrounding region.
For a more casual affair, Rare Hare is a charming spot to enjoy a meal or simply relax with a glass of wine amidst the vineyard’s serene backdrop.
DRINK >
The estate’s Willow Creek winery has been rebranded as Rare Hare (aligned with the Jackalope branding and the casual restaurant which is right next door). Wine’s are made under the direction of chief wine maker Geraldine McFaul. Vines planted in 1989 on the 11-hectare Vineyard, this is fertile land and ideal for cool-climate viticulture. Since 2018, the vineyard has only grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – regional flagship varieties. Viticulturist Ant Davenport has continued the vineyard’s legacy of meticulous hand-tending, and constant improvement of practices to produce the absolute best from the site every year.
Pop in for a wine tasting and you might be lucky enough to meet with iconic wine maker Michael Glover formerly the Chief Wine Maker at Bannockburn on the Bellarine and before that Moorilla in Tasmania. Who is currently working with the Rare Hare team, there are plenty of fine wines on tasting at Rare Hare but personally I can’t wait to see what an iconic wine maker like Glover can do with the estate
The hotel cocktail bar ‘Flaggerdoot’ delights in the alchemic process of distillation; Blending flavours and generating experimental spirits to serve up on cocktail menu, which features a mix of classics and in-house creations.
WORK OUT >
While they don’t have a gym at Jackalope they do have a lovely lap pool, spa and sauna and there are plenty of walks around the property and beyond. If you really need to work out they offer a gym pass to a local gym as part of your stay.
