There are places where the Aegean feels infinite, where the line between land and sea blurs into a kind of dream. Hotel Mediterraneo, perched at the quiet edge of Kastellorizo’s horseshoe harbour, is one of them—a seven-room retreat that feels more like a friend’s eccentric island home than a hotel. Step off the boat, leave your luggage by the blue door, and let the island’s languid rhythm take over.
AMBIENCE >
Designed by Parisian architect Marie Rivalant, Mediterraneo is all sun-bleached neoclassical charm with a dash of bohemian spirit. The rooms—each bright, unique, and splashed with colour—either gaze over the deep blue or into a peaceful garden. Ottoman platform beds, hand-picked textiles, and a gentle sea breeze set the mood; you’ll want to throw open the shutters and let the light in. There’s no pool, but who needs one when a bathing ladder drops you straight into turquoise water? Out front, sun loungers and the occasional turtle complete the scene. The vibe is unhurried, quietly romantic, and utterly unpretentious—a place where the hours slip by with a book, a swim, and a glass of something cold.
STAY >
Rooms are simple but thoughtfully detailed—think fans instead of air conditioning, a fridge stocked with water and wine, and bathrooms that (while sometimes a little rustic) do the job. The ground-floor suite is the pick if you want space and a private terrace for sunset-watching. Families can opt for interconnecting rooms, though the proximity to the sea means little ones will need supervision. Don’t expect five-star polish; do expect character, comfort, and a sense of place.

EAT >
Breakfast is a highlight: Greek yoghurt with honey, French croissants, Turkish tea, homemade preserves, and local cheese, all served on a terrace that floats above the harbour. Lunch and dinner are left to Kastellorizo’s waterfront tavernas—ask Marie for her favourites, or wander until you find your own. There’s no restaurant, but snacks and dinner can be arranged on request. The island’s food scene is as unfussy as the hotel: fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables, and the kind of meals that linger into the night.

SERVICE >
Service is personal but hands-off. Marie and her team are around if you need them, happy to share tips or arrange a boat trip to the Blue Grotto, but otherwise content to let you be. Some guests have found the welcome a little cool, but the prevailing mood is relaxed and low-key—this is a place for independent travellers who like to do their own thing.

DO >
Swim off the quay, paddle a canoe, or take a boat to hidden coves and the otherworldly Blue Cave. Kastellorizo is made for wandering: pastel houses, ancient ruins, and views back to the Turkish coast. There’s a small boutique on site for a spot of island-inspired shopping, and yoga can be arranged if you’re feeling virtuous. Mostly, though, this is a place to slow down and soak up the magic of the Med.
THE VERDICT >
Hotel Mediterraneo is for those who value charm over luxury, sea swims over infinity pools, and stories over slick service. It’s not perfect—wifi is patchy, air conditioning is absent, and the odd late-night thump from across the bay can disrupt the island’s peace. But for a few days, it’s easy to believe you’ve found your own private slice of the Aegean. Bring books, a hat, and a willingness to let the island set the pace.
