If you are travelling to Rome there is a very good chance people are going to say, you have to go to that Salami place, the one near Campo de Fiori, it’s brilliant. What people might not tell you is that if you want to eat there bookings are essential.
This is the perfect place to escape the heat after a morning of shopping and sightseeing. With Campo de Fiori just around the corner your tastebuds will already be in the mood for something special and delicious.
Shoppers for cheese, wine and salumi all come into the shop as diners sit for a slow lunch or dinner. Dishes that jumped out at us included the ‘Bis di Mariozzo’ which come as two little bread buns filled with whipped cod and a pesto of taggiasche olives (a small tasty olive similar to Ligurian Olives) €17. The Tonno Rosso Stagionato Sott’Olio is a red tuna sourced from the Sicilian coast and then steamed and aged in extra virgin olive oil. It is served with grilled roman artichokes and borettane onions which are seasoned in balsamic vinegar (€18).
I would suggest you get your server to make up a plate of delicious salumi and cheese because the selection is excellent. Then think about one of the classic pasta dishes, the Tortellino in Brodo which is a type of tortellini filled with beef, pork, parmesan and nutmeg and served in a chicken broth soup its delicious (€19). Or the Ondulo which is a short pasta tossed with white lamb ragu, mint and pecorino cheese.
HISTORY >
Founded in 1992 the Salumeria was an offshoot of the Roscioli family bakery. A major renovation in 2002 saw an expansion of the restaurant and kitchen and a focus on building the wine cellar. There are over 300 cheeses and 200 cured meats on the Salumeria counter as well as the range of pickled and cured products in jars and on the shelves.
WINE >
There are some excellent wines available by the glass or by the bottle which you can see on the shelves around you. The cellar has over 2800 different wines from Italy and around the world so it is worth talking to find something that matches the thirst you have!
And if you are not in the mood for wine there are beers and spirits available as well.
