If you’re looking for a little corner in Athens that feels like a breath of fresh, contemporary air—this is Anäna, right in the heart of Syntagma. With its bright, glass-fronted façade and a charming, glass-roofed arcade, Anäna is a place where you can sit back, sip your coffee, and watch the city hustle by, all while feeling a world away from the usual Athenian bustle.
The coffee here is a story in itself. Panagiotis Xylas leads the roasting, and every cup is crafted with care from single-origin beans—Ethiopian for something floral and complex, Colombian for a chocolatey note that sings in a cold cappuccino. They roast their own beans, and the selection changes with what’s available, so you’ll always find something new to try. Oat or almond milk? They’ve got you covered, though it’ll cost a little extra.
Now, about the food. Anäna is a haven for vegetarians and vegans, with a menu that’s small but thoughtful. Their signature banana bread is legendary—moist, fragrant, and made by the hands of Eri Karagkousi. If you’re in for breakfast or brunch, you must try the French toast with salted caramel and berries, or the mushroom flatbread with sun-dried tomatoes, wild rocket, and a whisper of truffle oil. Most of the sweets are vegan, and the pastries—especially the cinnamon rolls—are so good they’ll have you coming back for more.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a crowd that’s mostly young, creative, and stylish. The interiors are colorful and funky, and the outdoor patio has a retro 60s vibe that harks back to the days when this part of Athens was full of offices and local life. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over your coffee, chat with friends, or simply enjoy a slow morning in good company.
But, as with any place that becomes a darling of the scene, there are downsides. Some find the prices a bit steep for Athens, and the service can be hit or miss—sometimes laid-back to the point of slowness, sometimes a little brusque. Still, for a cozy, stylish spot with excellent coffee and a menu that’s almost entirely plant-based, Anäna is a standout.
