The RP Pinot Noir (sometimes referred to as The Côte recognising the vineyard of origin). RP is named after Gary’s mum Robyn Pamela who has been a mainstay of the winery over decades.
The By Farr vineyards are in Moorabool Valley (to the North East of Geelong and just to the North of the Bannockburn region). The North cote is a red to brown loam with buckshot stones across the surface. The most exposed of the three cotes but is harvested last of all because of the large amount of clay, holding valuable moisture for a long longer time than the other slopes.
Wine maker Nick Farr describes the wine “only the finest wood, the most perfect barrel expression during elevate from the best fruit parcels make it into the RP”.
Fruit is handpicked and fermented (50% whole bunch) in an open top fermenter for roughly 19 days, then spends 18 months in 50-60% new oak barrels.
This is an exceptionally elegant wine with an expressive and delightful perfume. There is a complex tannin structure that has extensive length and leaves you following the expression of flavour right to the end of the glass and the last drip.
