Since opening their doors at the new Wunderlich Lane in Redfern, Olympus Dining has been one of the hottest bookings in Sydney. Greek food at its finest, in the heart of one of Sydney’s original Greek suburbs.
AMBIENCE >
The Wunderlich Lane precinct includes the Eve Hotel, restaurants, bars, supermarkets and apartments. It’s stunning, and a vast improvement from the former shopping centre (or murder mall, IYKYK) on the border of Redfern and Surry Hills. The four year, $500 million redevelopment offers something for residents, locals and visitors.
Olympus Dining has a key position in the precinct, and the glass roof, modern Greek interior and bougainvillea tree define the space creating an impressive dining room. The roof is retractable, and much of the seating is on banquettes.
Our Sunday lunch visit saw families, friends and couples eating and drinking, with tables turning over throughout the afternoon. While I was initially disappointed with our bar seating, we had a view of the entire room, along with dedicated service.
EAT >
Visiting as a couple is a disadvantage. Two people can only eat so much food, and to be honest, the two banquet menus seemed a lot of food.
The menu is extensive with plenty of mezes to enjoy, along with larger proteins and plenty of sides. I could have eaten only mezes and been satisfied, and full, but it was not to be.
We started with the taramasalata in all its fish-y and lemon-y goodness, with bread to wipe the plate clean. Next was sardines, with the flesh falling away from the carcass to swipe through the sauce and olives. Calamari was chargrilled, but served cold.
Pork souvlaki was served with revithia, a chickpea soup, and lemon. A salad on the side provided some vegetables.
We declined dessert, but I received a frozen yoghurt as a birthday treat. With a candle even. This was more-ish and the perfect end to our meal.
DRINK >
The wine and cocktail lists are long, with staff on hand to help selections. We started with a beer and citrus spritz, choosing a bottle of Tino Mayer Gamay for our meal.
The wine list is impressive (recently awarded 3 glasses in the wine list of the year awards) with an extensive selection of Greek wine, with a map outlining the regions for those whose geography is lacking. With 32 wines available by the glass with a good selection of half bottles and magnums.
ONE MORE THING >
Olympus Dining came to Sydney fully formed, and with only a fraction of the menu tasted, there is plenty to eat on future visits. If you can get a booking.
